What we teach here

Read a brief description of the range of yoga and other classes we offer at Maitri Studio.

Yoga Styles

Hatha yoga

Hatha yoga is an overarching term for most yoga practised in the West, incorporating asanas (the physical poses) as well as pranayama (breath) and relaxation to achieve mental and physical balance and wellbeing. All other forms of yoga at the studio also come under this term, but we list the teachers who do not follow a particular style here.

Instructors: Diana - Lucie - Maggie - Steven - Susan - Tomek

Iyengar yoga

This is a form of hatha yoga developed by Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar with the use of props such as blocks, blankets and belts. Correct alignment of the body ensures you work safely, with maximum benefit to your flexibility, strength and wellbeing. All eight limbs of yoga are introduced, including pranayama and learning to focus attention. Chair-based classes if unable to get to the floor.

Instructors: Claire - Annamarie - Maura - Rachel

Flow yoga

A flowing yoga with some static poses and with focus on placement of breath & body. Can be more active (Lucie), gentler/slower (Ally, Valerie, Julie) or mixed (Oonagh)

Instructors: Julie - Lucie - Valerie

Core yoga

A strong practice that combines poses from hatha yoga with the core strengthening exercises from modern fitness techniques

Instructors: Eva

Ashtanga yoga

A dynamic yoga practice inspired by the Ashtanga Yoga system developed by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. Includes Sun Salutations, followed by standing, seated and lying down postures with vinyasa. A strong practice using bandhas, drishti and ujjayi breath.

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as “yogic sleep” or “effortless relaxation”

Instructors: Julie

Mum & baby yoga

Two types available: one focuses more on mum and postnatal recovery (Wiebke) and one more about baby and bonding (Lily), promoting relaxation, stimulating the brain and improving their muscle development. Both let you meet other new parents and have a little time out! Check out both and see what suits.

Instructors: Lily

Children's / Family yoga

Using postures, sound, breathing, self-massage and mindfulness, these sessions encourage children to develop their body and spatial awareness, as well as develop strength, flexibility, confidence and social skills. Suitable for a wide age range, from toddlers to teens. Family yoga sessions are a fun and interactive way to experience yoga while taking some quality time to support bonding as a family, held monthly. Neurodiverse children also supported (ASD, ADHD and more).

Other Classes

Aerial yoga

Although named 'yoga' this class comes from a fitness tradition, using hammocks slung from the ceiling beams to let you swing, float and fly! Enjoy a mix of cardio, abs & core, and yoga-style poses. Let your spine hang free and enjoy cocooning yourself at the end.

Instructors: Sandra

T'ai Chi

T'ai Chi is a system of holistic training, with a series of martial arts moves and techniques consisting of carefully coordinated natural movements. The slow movements of T'ai Chi are graceful, powerful, relaxed, balanced and meditative. They help improve balance, flexibility and strength, while calming the spirit and reducing stress.

Instructors: Julie-Anne

Pilates

Pilates works to strengthen the centre, lengthen the spine, increase body awareness, build muscle tone and gain flexibility. Pilates is excellent for rehabilitation for back, knees, hips, shoulders and other stress-related injuries. Pilates works the whole body addressing asymmetries, chronic weakness and bringing the body and mind back to balance.

Instructors: Aimee

Meditation and Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention with gentleness, curiosity and acceptance. Mindfulness helps to develop awareness so that we can live more fully in the present moment where we have more choice about how to respond to our experience. A regular meditation practice can help to restore peace and calm, increase concentration and efficiency and enhance communication and relationships.

Instructors: Clare - Fiona - Veronica

Gong baths / sound meditations

Using the surround sound of live instruments (gongs, bowls, bells, rain sticks etc) to create a peaceful and soothing environment to aid your own meditation and relaxation through the effect of the sounds on your body and mind.
