Yoga helps me with chronic pain

Not all of our students wish to share their names, and that's fine with us. Please note that the person pictured (Barbara*, doing a seated twist with Deirdre) is not the person who gave these comments. We are so grateful to this student for sharing their experience of yoga with teacher and OT Deirdre, and very happy that they are benefitting so much.

"I came as I have a lifelong chronic illness that’s left me with a disability including muscle weakness and pain. I wanted to try yoga for strength building alongside stress & mental health reasons but was nervous of not being fit or well enough for a standard class at a gym etc. I’m thrilled to have found this class with Deirdre and it has made a substantial difference to my physical and mental health. It’s amazing to have this offering for people with chronic conditions - we are often forgotten about in the exercise world.

Deirdre also comes at it from a medical perspective, having a background as a medical professional - so it’s the best of both worlds - both calming and nurturing yoga, but with the added benefit of a practitioner who has vast experience with the body and physiology, resulting in a class that’s perfectly designed for people with illnesses and specific needs.

I am finding I have increased mobility and decreased pain levels in the couple of days after each session and it is lovely to take time for myself. The sessions are definitely improving my relationship with my body, making me realise I’m stronger than I thought and reminding me that looking after myself is important. The classes are great for relaxation too, I always feel calmer at the end than when I walked into the room.

As it’s a class for chronic pain and chronic conditions, knowing that everyone else in the room is also dealing with a health issue makes it much less anxiety-inducing! Deirdre always ensures each class member works within their level of ability. It’s super inclusive! Deirdre creates a warm and safe and judgement-free environment where we all respect each other. Because we all have chronic pain or illness, we have a certain understanding of what each other are going through so it’s nice not to feel alone. I think one of the great things about the class is Deirdre always gives us options for movements so if one is too hard or painful, she can show you a different way of doing it. You will be supported at every stage and modifications are made to adapt exercises/poses to meet your needs. It’s a very supportive environment.

Give it a go and don’t worry about lack of experience, skill level or flexibility, this course worked with our limitations and everyone was valued and felt confident."

Wow. After a write up like that, who wouldn't want to give it a go? Interested to find out more? Read Deirdre's page for details of this particular class. If this time doesn't suit, you might also be interested in chair yoga, or some of the other gentle options available.
