Functional Breathing for Musicians | Online

What is this?

As musicians, we rarely really stop to think about how we breathe (unless perhaps we are singers or players of woodwind / brass instruments). However, even those of us who are trained in maximum breath efficiency during performance are still not as likely to question our breathing at rest and while going through our daily lives.

Do you have a tendency to over-breathe? Are you breathing through our mouth? How do you breathe when you sleep? Are you aware of how breathing patterns influence a range of health conditions?

Whether you are performing at professional level or enjoy music-making in your spare time, the way you breathe in other contexts of your life has a profound impact on your stamina, performance efficiency, concentration, anxiety levels and general baseline health.

Over four hour-long weekly sessions presented live online, Functional Breathing for Musicians will introduce how breathing affects performance, posture, onset of fatigue, movement (including injury prevention) and stage fright.

You will discover how to harness the power of the breath for peak musical performance to achieve your full potential through a range of traditional pranayama breathwork practices as well as the scientifically grounded Oxygen Advantage® breathing re-education method.

Originally designed to enhance performance for elite athletes by Patrick McKeown, these techniques have been specifically tailored to the needs of musicians by Dr Xenia Pestova Bennett to help increase energy, focus and resilience while enhancing your overall health.

About the instructor:

Dr Xenia Pestova Bennett is an internationally active concert pianist and lecturer in musical performance at the University of Nottingham. She combines her research and experience in performance anxiety with extensive accredited training as a yoga, breathwork and meditation instructor. Having studied in the UK, The Netherlands and Canada, Xenia holds a Doctorate in Performance from McGill University.

Her wellness training includes completion of a 200-hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training qualification led by Eleonora Ramsby-Herrera in 2019 (Yoga Alliance Professionals), Yin/Yang Yoga and Mindfulness (primary and secondary levels amounting to 100 hours certified by Yoga Alliance International) with Sarah Powers in 2018 and Oxygen Advantage® functional breathing instructor training with Patrick McKeown in 2021.

In addition to performing and teaching, Xenia offers coaching on anxiety management to individuals and organisations. Her past and present clients include Ad Agio Workshops for Musicians; Facebook London; Goldsmiths, University of London; Moving on Music; Sound and Music; TU Dublin; Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Nottingham.
